Masonry work is one of the oldest crafts. It has established a strong reputation as one of the most prestigious traditional building materials. Even as new methods of construction and materials become more prevalent in building construction practices, masonry remains the most important in the building industry.

Previously, masonry construction had limitations in multistory buildings. However, extensive research, including large-scale testing, on the behaviour of masonry has enabled engineers to design tall masonry structures with greater exactitude, economy, and confidence based on sound engineering principles. Ready mix concrete suppliers are the way to go to acquire the necessary building blocks of masonry works.

Masonry is the construction of building units that are bonded together with mortar. The building units could be bricks, stone, or concrete precast blocks. Masonry is commonly used in the construction of building foundations, walls, columns, and other similar structural components. The primary advantage of masonry construction is that it performs a variety of functions in load bearing structures such as-

  • sustaining loads,
  • space division,
  • insulating both thermally and acoustically
  • providing fire and weather protection, etc., which must be provided separately in framed structures

Masonry Supplies by Ready mix Concrete Suppliers

Cement

The cement should be IS-compliant ordinary portland cement (OPC). Masonry typically employs OPC- 43 grade cement. Masonry can also be done with approved blended cement. It is delivered in 50 kg bags (or bulk carriers in the case of silo storage), and each batch must be accompanied by a factory test certificate.Cement prices can vary from one ready mix supplier to another ready mix concrete supplier.

It should also be tested before use to determine its strength, setting time, and so on. If the cement has been stored for more than 6 months from the date of manufacture, or if the stored cement shows signs of deterioration or contamination, it should be tested according to the Engineer’s instructions before use. If blended cement is used, it should only be blended in a factory. The quality and strength of masonry and plastering work are primarily determined by the cement used.

As a result, cement should be field and laboratory tested before use. Cement should be tested for field tests such as cement brand, manufacturing date, fineness, hardness, and floating test, as well as laboratory tests such as soundness, setting time, and so on. That is where ready mix concrete suppliers can be a blessing.

Bricks

Bricks should be inspected for size, shape, frog, finishing, colour, soundness, and breaking, among other things. It should have a crushing strength of at least 35 kg/cm2. Brick must be locally available, reasonably uniform in size, and have plane rectangular faces, shape, and colour. Bricks must be uniformly well burned in order to produce a clear ringing sound when struck, and they must be free of cracks and other flaws that compromise their strength. Bricks can also be obtained from ready mix suppliers.

On fracture, they must have a fine-grained, uniform, homogeneous, and dense texture and be free of lime lumps, laminations, cracks, air holes, soluble salts causing efflorescence, and other defects that may impair their strength, durability, appearance, or usefulness for the intended purpose. They must have a frog with a depth of 10 to 20 mm. Make use of bricks made from potable water.

Solid Cement Concrete Block

To avoid confusion with slabs and panels, the height of the block shall not exceed six times its length. The concrete block’s nominal dimensions must be-

  • 400, 500, or 600 mm in length
  • 200 or 100 mm in height
  • Width options include 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mm.

The variation in length of the block shall not exceed 5 mm, and the variation in height and width of blocks shall not exceed 3 mm. The solid concrete blocks serve as load bearing units and must have a block density of at least 1800 kg/m3. The compressive strength of the solid concrete block should be between 40 and 50 kg/sq.cm. Stone

Stones for masonry work should be tested for various field tests such as colour, appearance, absorption, hardness, and so on. Stone must be hard and durable, with no cracks, flaws, sand, holes, veins, patches of soft or loose material, and so on. Stone must be obtained from an authorised quarry. Typically, the stone used should be small enough to be lifted and placed by hand.

The length of the stone shall not be more than three times its height. The stone can be up to 30 cm tall. The stone must be hammer dressed on the faces, sides, and beds to allow it to come into close proximity with the neighbouring stone. The ‘bushing’ in the face must not protrude more than 40 mm on exposed faces and 10 mm on plastered faces.
