polymer industry, polymer,

Polymer is a synthetic substance that has been made by very large molecules called macromolecules. Polymer in manufacturing is used for making products that are durable, non-corrosive and stay on for a long time.

During COVID-19, just like every other industry, the polymer industry was just as affected. The reduction in demand for light vehicles reduced during the lockdown where polymer-based products are highly required. Although there are other industrial sectors, where the use of polymer-based products saw a rise. Industries such as packaging, food processing, personal care, pharmaceutical, etc are the sectors that weren’t affected by covid rather they saw a boost due to it.

India’s Polymer Industry

India stands as the third-largest country for polymer consumption, after China and USA. When the lockdown happened, caused by the pandemic, there was a certain stand still in the industry. But soon after that, the industry is picking it up again. The consumption, usage, and manufacturing in India will always be on the rise.

Applications, trends and role in different industries

The role of polymer-based products had increased heavily during the pandemic when the healthcare sector was overburdened. Manufactured polymer is something that would be required for various uses in almost all industries. Here are some of the products and their application and trends:

  1. Thermoplastics: Few years back, thermoplastics accounted for the largest used product in the polymer market. This increase has been caused due to an increase in the food packaging industry during the lockdown. Food delivery grew larger while also increasing the demand for packaging materials that are made through thermoplastics.
  2. Polyethylene: A largely used category that has always been growing and is forecasted to become one of the largest used material products in manufacturing. The product’s ability is used in various sectors, such as automotive, construction, and packaging. Polyethylene’s outstanding qualities, such as high-heat resistance, flexibility, stability, make it one of the most needed materials in manufacturing.
  3. PVC: Polyvinyl chloride (or PVC) is another important polymer-based product. Something so commonly used in household building to large industries. PVC pipes are considered as one of the best types for transmission of water. They are easily fixable, resistant to heat and extreme climatic conditions, and light to carry. Their stability remains throughout all sectors.

Role of sustainability at the end

The polymer industry is and should be focused on manufacturing products that are sustainable in their use and to the environment as well. People have shifted from using wood, metal, etc to using polymers that have a much longer life. In the different kinds of polymers, the dominant one is plastic. This dominance is caused by the novel research that were developed that made plastic one of the most sustainable and usable products in the industry.
